My name is Alain Nicolini, and I am a psychiatrist based in Amsterdam. I provide psychiatric assessment, psychotherapy, and medication management for adults.

I studied medicine and completed my psychiatric training at KU Leuven in Belgium. Throughout my training and clinical career in both Belgium and the Netherlands, I have worked in university hospitals, specialist outpatient clinics, crisis psychiatry, inpatient wards, liaison psychiatry, addiction services, and community mental healthcare. This broad clinical experience has allowed me to work with people experiencing a wide range of conditions, including anxiety and mood disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, personality disorders, trauma-related difficulties, psychotic disorders, and complex psychiatric presentations.

Alongside my medical specialization, I completed advanced postgraduate training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and Schema Therapy, as well as additional training in EMDR. This enables me to integrate psychotherapy and psychiatry, offering treatment that goes beyond symptom reduction to address the underlying emotional and relational patterns that contribute to psychological distress.

I believe that effective psychiatric care combines scientific evidence with genuine curiosity and a collaborative therapeutic relationship. My goal is to help people gain a deeper understanding of themselves while working towards meaningful and lasting change.

About me

My Approach

Assessment and treatment are tailored to the individual rather than guided by diagnosis alone. Clinical decisions are based on current scientific evidence while taking into account personality, developmental history, relationships, and the broader social and cultural context.

Particular attention is given to transcultural psychiatry. Living across cultures, migration, multilingualism, and differences in cultural background can significantly influence how psychological difficulties are experienced, expressed, and understood. These aspects are considered an integral part of assessment and treatment whenever relevant.

Treatment may consist of psychiatric assessment, psychotherapy, pharmacological treatment, or a combination of these approaches. The objective is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the individual and to provide treatment that is both evidence-based and adapted to each person's unique circumstances.
